Finally found some time to write a short blog post on the announcements this morning at PDC 2009.Microsoft PDC keynote highlights Ray Ozzie started the keynote this morning, focusing on Microsoft’s “three-screen” vision for the future. There will be three screens connected to the cloud: TV, (handheld) devices and of course good old PC. This vision is driven by some key players: Windows 7, Internet Explorer, Silverlight and Windows Azure. Make sure to have a look at these four if you want to play in this future.

Some announcements were made as well:

Had a great day yesterday, driving trough the city of Los Angeles and looking at various places in town. Conference day one was also very interesting, lots of good sessions. Currently missing a session slot though, waiting for a Channel9 interview on the Windows Azure SDK for PHP. Stay tuned!

    As much as I love most of the MS development stack, I think you just used "Internet Explorer" and "future" in the same sentence. Maybe that would be less laughable if IE weren't dead last in performance and support of the very standards that the future of the web rests on.

    Oh yeah, the falming started :-)

    WHen looking at Silverlight, which was really the main thing that stood out as the future of UI, browser actually does not matter as it is only the runtime environment for Silverlight. Feel free to use any browser you like, there's Chrome and Firefox support, it runs on Mac and Linux, ...

    Okay, fine: so you just told me the browser is irrelevant for Silverlight developers. I won't argue with that. For non-Silverlight web developers, IE is currently terrible and is slated to nearly-but-not-quite catch up to 2009 browsers by the end of 2010 or so. You still haven't made a case for why Internet Explorer is an important part of the "three-screen" future.

    Microsoft showed some stuff of IE9, which in their belief will be the best browser on Windows. Anyways, do not pin me on this, I'm just reporting the keynote contents. We'll have to wait to see if they are right. Personally, I expect this by Mix 2010.
